Homer City Project = A Bad Deal for our Economy

Lack of Real Jobs

  • Permanent jobs created at large data centers globally average only around 27 people. (source)
  • Data centers are one of the least job-intensive sectors in the U.S. economy. Data centers are capital-intensive, not labor-intensive. Even if jobs triple during the current data center boom, these jobs will still amount to less than 1% of jobs in PA. (source)
  • Thousands of temporary construction jobs will employ non-local people from out of state. The peak employment of 4000 people will happen for approximately only one year, and then those people will leave to new construction sites. (source)
  • There will be no lasting impact on regional job growth. The drawbacks to the Data Center on public health, rising energy and water costs, and environment greatly outweigh any perceived benefit. (source)

Less Money in Your Wallet

  • Electricity wholesale costs up to 267% more in regions with data centers! These costs will be passed onto consumers!  (source) In states with a concentration of data centers, consumer bills have risen an average of 14% in just one year and are projected to continue to rise. (source)

Homer City Project = Bad for Public Health

Toxic Air that threatens health and environmental consequences

  • The power plant could release up to 917 tons of ammonia per year, and ammonia is known as a precursor pollutant that reacts in the atmosphere to form fine particulates, raising the community’s risk of respiratory illnesses, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and premature death. (source)
  • The power plant will also sharply increase the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over the previous plant. These VOCs include benzene and formaldehyde, among others. VOCs are a category of pollutants that can have short term effects, such as coughing, shortness of breath, asthma complications, headaches, and nausea, as well as long term disease and cancer. Great Cost to Community Health

  • Residents who live near data centers report a constant 24/7 humming from cooling systems and vibrations strong enough to rattle windows up to 96 decibels (well above the 85 decibel level considered harmful to hearing). This will lead to chronic sleep disruption, anxiety, and other health concerns.  Chronic noise exposure increases the risks of cardiovascular and stress-related illnesses. (source)
  • New research suggests data centers could contribute to 1300 deaths annually and up to $20 billion of costs in healthcare for private individuals. (source)
  • Increased  hazardous waste from fracking gas for the new HC power plant will intensify public exposures to naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMS), resulting in serious heart and lung disease and cancer, including childhood leukemia. (source) (source)

Billionaires Steal from Our Community

  • Data centers contributed roughly $340 million less in tax revenue in 2023 than they are taking out of the pockets of PA taxpayers in the form of rising electricity costs. (source)
  • The goal of the Homer City project is not to create jobs or bolster our economy, but to line the billionaires’ pockets. Rich investors anticipate “AI and the electrification to support it will drive over 50% of global corporate profit growth in the next decade.” (source)
  • The Homer City plant is being funded by the New York-based hedge fund Knighthead Capital Management, out of state people who do not live in our community and do not care what happens to us. 

  Billionaires Create an Experiment in Our Community

  • The Homer City project has been fast-tracked with almost no community input, funded by an out-of-state billionaire hedge fund. (source)
  • The Homer City Redevelopment spokesperson bragged at a recent real estate conference: “We are being used for a pilot project” by the state to smooth the way for more billionaire big tech investors for data centers across Pennsylvania. Don’t make us your experiment! (source)

A Better World is Possible!

  • Renewable energy is the future, providing steadier and more reliable job growth and community prosperity, cheaper electricity, and creating a better environment for us and our children.  For example, support solar in all of its forms – rooftop, community, and large-scale solar projects. Solar is cheaper and takes less time than fossil fuel-based energy generation to come online. (source)
  • Public utilities (over private hedge funds) are a better option, offering more efficient and accountable infrastructure. (source) The 2023 Build Renewable Act passed in New York state is an example of legislation encouraging utility-scale renewable energy development–with many created local jobs. (source)
  • Public Green Infrastructure could create permanent, union-wage jobs, more prosperous communities, and reduce pollution and climate impacts. (source) For example, investing in electrified railroads and mass transit, particularly in rural areas, would bring enormous opportunities and benefits to our region.   • Ecological Restoration creates more permanent, union-wage jobs as well. Capping orphan wells, for example, with the development of new apprenticeship programs, could create many, fulfilling, jobs “where we’ve lost a lot of the fossil fuel industry jobs, and we’ve had a lot of communities left behind, a lot of devastation.” Watershed restoration could also create many union-wage jobs.
